Royal William Rd - 11:30am - 3 Hours

Learn how to use natural light to advantage when working on outdoors black & white portraits. This workshop will take place in the historical setting. The old master painters had a special word - chiaroscuro -(meaning light-dark) for the dramatic quality of shadow in portraits. This concept, as it relates to black and white portraiture, will be fully explained. The importance of 'catch lights' in eyes & 'bokeh' (for dreamy, soft backgrounds) will also be addressed, as will the advantage of shooting in "open shade". Portraits will be taken with black and white conversion in mind, but can also be enjoyed in colour as well. The textured, stone walls and arcaded walkways in the venue will offer an atmospheric setting for this workshop!

Autumn Photography in Devonport Park

Saturday 02 November
Devonport - 12pm - 2 Hours

Caleb Williams
This workshop invites us to slow down and 'focus' on the world in front of us. Our subject will be the changing face of Devonport as it takes on the gold and copper tones of autumn. We will experiment with perspective and aperture to capture things such as fallen leaves, and the dramatic tonal values of treetops. The workshop will provide deeper understanding of composition and depth of field as we experiment with different styles of shooting. We will create a landscape 'story' - composed from still-life and large ensemble elements. Come and enjoy a photography walk in crisp autumn air and experience this magical season in the park.

I really enjoy these workshops. Kevin Hind is an excellent tutor/leader/expert. This particular event was marred by really dreadful weather and lack of light, but inspite of that I feel that I learned a lot albeit without taking anything I was pleased with but I now have the confidence to put that knowledge into practice.

White, the colour of milk or fresh snow, due to the reflection of all visible rays of light the complete opposite of black...I am always amazed just how clever, how beautiful nature is... This shot was taken on my first day into this trip. My wife and I decided to spend Labor Day weekend in the mountains which was wonderful but also very busy which isn't the best for wildlife photography. However, I did come away with some good shots from my outing (mostly landscape) and this is by far one of my favorite. I love how the light is striking the deer's face while he is mostly shrouded in shadow. I took this with a Nikon 200-500mm @ 500, 1/160s, ISO 100 and f6.3. I shot this across th

Was out looking for anything to photograph on one my few days off from work. So I went to the plot of land where I deer hunt. Any wild flower that may still be in bloom, insects, things like that. Tons of grasshoppers everywhere and I came across this fella. I didn't realize he possibly had a wounded left wing until I processed the photos. No wonder he sat thru many different angles, exposures, and me getting up in his face and didn't offer to fly off. LOL
